What You Need To Know Before Choosing A Logo

“There are three responses to a piece of design—yes, no, and WOW! Wow is the one to aim for.” – Milton GlaserColor, font, and design are only a few factors that impact your choice of logo style. We are not talking about any logo but one that can grow with your brand image. Although it may not be at the top of your priority list when starting a business, it is an essential promotional tool. The choice of logo style can accurately portray your brand’s core values and what you have to offer.
What Will I Learn?

1) Why Do Logos Matter?
2) Five Different Styles Of Logo
3) Our Process At Metakream

Why Do Logos Matter?

“Design is the silent ambassador of your brand.” —Paul RandLogos matter as much as any other aspect of your brand. Recognizable, meaningful, and marketable are essential. Think about leading today’s leading brands. Twitter has the bird which signifies freedom. FedEx with the arrow in the logo representing speed and accuracy. Heck, even Amazon with their smile shows how they sell everything from A to Z.

Five Different Styles Of Logo

“Logos survive because they can adapt to countless formats” – Sagi Haviv

The five styles of logos are wordmarks, letter marks, pictorial marks, combination marks, and emblems. Each with its own advantages and downfalls.

Wordmark

Wordmarks are of the most simple but straightforward styles of logos. Wordmark logos consist of a variety of text enhanced by the color and design of lettering. Ideally for shorter business names like Visa, Google, and FedEx.

  • It is a great idea to use a wordmark logo for new businesses with distinct names that stick in the target audiences’ minds.

Letter Marks

Letter marks, much like wordmarks, are designed around the text. This time the logos are based on the initials of the company’s name. Some examples would be HBO, NASA, and IBM.

  • This is a golden logo style if your brand name is difficult to pronounce or too long.

Pictorial Marks

Pictorial marks, also known as brand marks, contain some of the most iconic logos of the bunch. With no words, they have to convey the whole brand through only an image embodying “a picture is worth a thousand words.” This is what makes pictorial marks tricky to implement for new companies but amazing for international brands as pictures transcend language barriers.

  • Pictorial marks are best used when the company’s brand image is more well-known or rapidly growing.

Combination Marks

Combination Marks are logos that combine a symbol with words. This logo style is able to ensure your brand name is associated with an image that represents your brand. Making it easier to transition to a pictorial mark in the future for greater brand recognition. This is a great option for brands that are new or less well-known that want to distinguish themselves from the crowd.

Emblems

Emblems, much like combination marks, combine words with a symbol but this time the text is within the symbol. With the compromise of being less flexible than combination marks, they bring about an air of authority and authenticity to the brand image.

  • An emblem is a great choice of logo if you wish to create a feeling of quality, reliability, and longevity for your brand.
